Typography Matters: Choosing the Right Fonts for Your Brand
Typography is the most underestimated element in brand design. Done well, it communicates personality before a single word is read. Done poorly, it undermines everything else. Here's how to get it right.
1. Type Has a Voice
Every typeface communicates something. A geometric sans-serif says precision and modernity. A humanist serif says warmth and trust. A display script says creativity and energy. The first step in choosing fonts is understanding what you want your brand to say.
2. Build a Typography System
Don't choose fonts — build a system. You need a display face for headlines, a text face for body copy, and optionally a monospace for technical content. Define sizes, weights, line heights, and letter spacing for each level. Consistency is what turns type into brand language.
3. Limit Your Palette
Two typefaces are almost always enough. Three is the maximum. More than that creates visual noise and signals a lack of design discipline. The constraint forces intentionality.
4. Test at Scale
A font that looks beautiful at 48px may be unreadable at 14px. Always test your type choices at the sizes and weights you'll actually use — body copy on mobile, captions on a small screen, headlines at billboard scale.
5. Custom Type Is the Ultimate Differentiator
For brands that want to own their visual identity completely, a custom typeface is the answer. Custom type is impossible to replicate and immediately signals investment and seriousness. It's the highest level of typographic brand expression.
